Category Theory under threat in Cambridge

As many subscribers to this list will know, I have continued to lecture a course on Category Theory in Part III of the Mathematical Tripos in Cambridge every year since Martin Hyland and I retired (there being no-one on the current Faculty who is able to do it). I'm quite proud of the fact that I didn't even miss a year as a result of Covid! I have now been informed that Cambridge University has a new policy of not allowing people who are not on the University payroll to teach examinable courses, which if implemented strictly means that Category Theory will cease to be an option in Part III from next year. I know that there are many people on this list who first encountered categories through Martin's or my Part III lectures. If you feel, as I do, that the suppression of this option is a disgrace to Cambridge, I'd be grateful if you could write to the Head of DPMMS, Ivan Smith (is200(a)cam.ac.uk) and tell him so. CT2026 Cambridge Satellite Event — 13–18 July 2026

We are pleased to announce the CT2026 Cambridge Satellite Event taking place 13–18 July 2026 at the Department of Computer Science and Technology, University of Cambridge. The International Category Theory Conference 2026 (https://ct2026.com<https://ct2026.com/>) is a hybrid event, and we invite remote participants to join us to attend from Cambridge. In collaboration with the CT2026 organisers, we will stream talks from the main conference, as well as support participants who are giving their talks online. There will be plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow attendees, including coffee breaks between sessions, pub trips in the evenings, and a punting excursion on the river Cam. Help wanted with editing Category Theory interviews

Dear all, Over the last year or so, I have been conducting interviews with members of the Category Theory community about their research careers and their experiences in the field. I hope to start sharing these interviews with the community soon. However, there is a bottleneck in the process at the moment, in that I have little experience with editing and have difficulty finding time for editing amidst other responsibilities (such as conducting the interviews). I am therefore looking for one or two people who would be interested in helping out with editing the interviews (some are audiovisual, others just audio). I cannot provide any compensation (the interviews will be freely available for everyone to watch/listen, as soon as they are ready), but I am hoping that there will be some of you on the mailing list who share an interest in mathematical history, and have a little experience with editing. (Needless to say, there are many people in the community I would like to interview; if I can find help with the editing, this will free up more of my time to do so!) Sir Izak Moerdijk

I am sure all subscribers to this list will want to join me in congratulating Ieke Moerdijk on his appointment as a Knight of the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands, which was announced on Friday. He tells me that `Sir Izak' is not an approved form of address in the Netherlands, but I think that the Anglophones amongst us can think of him that way, if only to underscore the parallel with another Sir Isaac (Newton). Dear Colleagues, The 113th Peripatetic Seminar on Sheaves and Logic, a meeting devoted to category theory and its applications, will take place at the Université catholique de Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, on 26-27 September 2026. Conference website: https://sites.uclouvain.be/pssl113 Important dates: 31 July 2026: deadline for abstract submission. 15 August 2026: deadline for registration. 26-27 September 2026: PSSL 113. Registration and abstract submission are now open. Attendance is free, but registration is required. Contributed talks on all aspects of category theory and its applications are welcome. Abstracts should be at most one page, including references, and should be submitted using the template available on the conference website. FMCS 2026: final Announcement, registration closes soon!

This is the final announcement for the 33rd Foundational Methods in Computer Science (FMCS) workshop, to be held at St. Francis Xavier University, Nova Scotia, from June 15th to June 19th, 2026. It includes full details about the workshop, campus accommodations, local dining and activities, and travel information. **Registration and Abstract Submission** Registration takes less than 5 minutes and is needed so I can organize catering needs. They need quite a lead time. This CRC offers a workshop and guest programme and a number of PhD and postdoc positions, spanning higher category theory, algebraic/arithmetic geometry, homotopy theory, geometric topology, measured group theory, Riemannian geometry, Lorentzian geometry, symplectic geometry.
