STACS 2023 - Call for Papers ----------------------- The 40th International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science is planned to take place from 7 March to 10 March 2023 in Hamburg, Germany. For the first time, STACS 2023 will consist of two tracks, A and B, to facilitate the work of the program committee(s). Track A is dedicated to algorithms and data structures, complexity and games. Track B will cover automata, logic, semantics and theory of programming. LISTS OF TOPICS Authors are invited to submit papers presenting original and unpublished research on theoretical aspects of computer science. Typical areas include: Track A: algorithms and data structures, including: design of parallel, distributed, approximation, parameterized and randomized algorithms; analysis of algorithms and combinatorics of data structures; computational geometry, cryptography, algorithms for machine learning, algorithmic game theory, quantum algorithms complexity, including: computational and structural complexity theory, parameterized complexity, randomness in computation Track B: automata and formal languages, including: automata theory, games, algebraic and categorical methods, coding theory, models of computation, computability logic in computer science, including: finite model theory, database theory, semantics, type systems, program analysis, specification & verification, rewriting and deduction, learning theory, logical aspects of complexity These lists are not exhaustive. The title page consists of the title of the paper and the abstract, but *no* author information. The first section of the paper should start on the next page. The PCs reserve the right to reassign a paper to a different track. The usage of pdflatex and the LIPIcs style file are mandatory no changes to font size, page geometry, etc. are permitted (see http://www.dagstuhl.de/en/publications/lipics <http://www.dagstuhl.de/en/publications/lipics>) . Submissions not in the correct format or submitted after the deadline will not be considered. The paper should contain a succinct statement of the issues and of their motivation, a summary of the main results, and a brief explanation of their significance, accessible to non-specialist readers. Proofs omitted due to space constraints must be put into an appendix, to be read by the program committee members at their discretion. Simultaneous submission to other conferences with published proceedings or to journals is not allowed. PC members are excluded from submitting. As in the previous two years, STACS 2023 will employ a lightweight double-blind reviewing process: submissions should not reveal the identity of the authors in any way. The purpose of the double-blind reviewing is to help PC members and external reviewers come to an initial judgment about the paper without bias, not to make it impossible for them to discover the authors if they were to try. Nothing should be done in the name of anonymity that weakens the submission or makes the job of reviewing the paper more difficult. In particular, important references should not be omitted or anonymized. In addition, authors should feel free to disseminate their ideas or draft versions of their paper as they normally would. For example, authors may post drafts of their papers on the web, submit them to arXiv, and give talks on their research ideas. There will be a rebuttal period for authors, see below for the dates. Authors will receive the reviews of their submissions (via EasyChair) and have three days to submit rebuttals (via EasyChair). These rebuttals become part of the PC discussions, but entail no specific responses. At least one author of each accepted paper is expected to register at the conference. For authors who cannot present their paper in person a possibility for remote presentation will be offered. Note that at least one of the authors will have to register for STACS'23 at the cost of around 400???. PROCEEDINGS Accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of the symposium. As usual, these proceedings will appear in the Leibniz International Proceedings in Informatics (LIPIcs) series, based at Schloss Dagstuhl. This guarantees perennial, free and easy electronic access, while the authors retain the rights over their work. With their submission, authors consent to sign a license authorizing the program committee chairs to organize the electronic publication of their paper, provided the paper is accepted. Submissions not adhering to the specified format and length may be rejected immediately. ESOP, FASE, and TACAS will use **double-blind reviewing**. Authors are asked to omit their names and institutions; refer to prior work in the third person, just as prior work by others; not to include acknowledgements that might identify them. ESOP and FoSSaCS will use an **author rebuttal phase**. TACAS will use rebuttal for selected submissions (those in the grey zone). Artefact submission and evaluation Regular tool paper and tool demonstration paper submissions to TACAS must be accompanied by an artefact submitted shortly after the paper. The artefact will be evaluated, and the outcome will be considered in the paper's acceptance decision. Authors of research papers and case study papers may submit an artefact for evaluation after receiving the acceptance notifications. The outcome of the artefact evaluation will not change the paper acceptance decision. ESOP, FASE, and FoSSaCS will accept artefact submissions; however, participation in it is voluntary; the artefact submission deadline is after the paper notification deadline. The outcome will not alter the paper acceptance decision. For specific instructions regarding artefacts, see the web pages of the individual conferences. -- PUBLICATION The proceedings will be published in the Advanced Research in Computing and Software Science (ARCoSS) subline of Springer's LNCS series. The proceedings volumes will appear in gold open access, so the published versions of all papers will be available for everyone to download from the publisher's website freely, from the date of online publication, perpetually. The copyright of the papers will remain with the authors. -- AWARDS The strongest papers from the four conferences will be nominated for the ETAPS best paper awards of EAPLS, EASST and EATCS, and the SCP best tool paper award. 2023 Joint Mathematical Meetings

The Joint Mathematical Meetings are the world's largest annual meeting of mathematicians. In 2023 they will take place January 4 - 7 in Boston, Massachusetts. As part of this huge meeting, the American Mathematical Society is having a special session on Applied Category Theory on Thursday, January 5th. Partitions are the mathematical tool to describe definiteness and indefiniteness, distinctions and distinctions, as well as distinguishability and indistinguishability. There is a semi-algorithmic process or ``Yoga'' of linearization to transform the concepts of partition math into the corresponding vector space concepts. Then it is seen that those vector space concepts, particularly in Hilbert spaces, are the mathematical framework of quantum mechanics. (QM). This shows that those concepts, e.g., distinguishability versus indistinguishability, are the central organizing concepts in QM to describe an underlying reality of objective indefiniteness--as opposed to the classical physics and common sense view of reality as ``definite all the way down'' This approach thus supports what Abner Shimony called the ``Literal Interpretation'' of QM which interprets the formalism literally as describing objective indefiniteness and objective probabilities--as well as being complete in contrast to the other realistic interpretations such as the Bohmian, spontaneous localization, and many world interpretations which embody other variables, other equations, or other worldly ideas. N. Kolmogorov in 1932 proposed an original version of mathematical intuitionism where the concept of problem plays a central role, and which differs in its content from the versions of intuitionism developed by A. Heyting and other followers of L. Brouwer. The popular BHK-semantics of Intuitionistic logic follows Heyting's line and conceals the original features of Kolmogorov's logical ideas. Homotopy Type theory (HoTT) implies a formal distinction between sentences and higher-order constructions and thus provides a mathematical argument in favour of Kolmogorov's approach and against Heyting's approach. At the same time HoTT does not support the constructive notion of negation applicable to general problems, which is informally discussed by Kolmogorov in the same context. After getting permission from Jean B'enabou's son for doing so I have made copies of some of his most influential unpublished texts on fibered categories available on my home page under https://www2.mathematik.tu-darmstadt.de/~streicher/FibCatTexts/ jb_montreal_74.pdf are his notes for the 1974 course in Montreal jb_lln_80.pdf are J.-R. Roisin's notes of Benabou's famous 1980 course at Louvain-la-Neuve jb_chapitre1.pdf is a copy of Chapter 1 of his never finished book "Des Cat'egories Fibr'ees" In 2 folders at the same place you find copies of the Theses of Celeyrette and Moens. The first one was directed by Jean himself and the second heavily influenced by Jean's 1980 course. The copies are partly of moderate quality but readable with a bit of good will. Would be great to have them typed within TAC Reprints series! Jean's work was very influential but not easily available. Hope these copies make it easier for younger people to form their own opinion about seminal work overshadowed by controversies in the past...
