Collection honouring Robert Paré for his 80th birthday

We are pleased to announce a special collection in Applied Categorical Structures honouring our friend and colleague, Bob Paré, on the occasion of this 80th birthday. Throughout his career Bob (Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Professor at Dalhousie University) has made several lasting contributions to category theory, including notable research in a broad range of subjects, such as double categories, higher categories, indexed categories, toposes and accessible categories. This collection will bring together contributions which honour the lasting impact Bob has made, and is making, in the category theory community. Submissions will be open from 1 October 2024 until 30 June 2025 at this link: https://link.springer.com/collections/dijeibfdbh All submissions on topics which celebrate Bob's work are welcome, including double categories, higher categories, indexed categories, toposes and accessible categories. The collection will be edited by four guest editors: - Bryce Clarke (Tallinn University of Technology) - Marco Grandis (University of Genoa) - Dorette Pronk (Dalhousie University) - Christina Vasilakopoulou (National Technical University of Athens) The publication process for this collection in Applied Categorical Structures differs from the traditional model for a special volume. Special Volume of MSCS in honor of Marek Zawadowski

Dear Colleagues, We are honored to announce a special volume of the journal Mathematical Structures in Computer Science celebrating the work of Marek Zawadowski. Marek Zawadowski (1960-2024) was a mathematician at the University of Warsaw. He received his Ph.D. from the Université de Montréal in 1989 under the supervision of Gonzalo Reyes with the dissertation “Théorie de la descente pour les prétopos.” He made fundamental contributions to category theory, logic, and linguistics. He passed away unexpectedly in February 2024. This special volume is a celebration of Marek Zawadowski’s work and welcomes submissions on a broad range of topics, including: categorical logic, higher category theory, and linguistics. From data types to development techniques and specification formalisms, both theoreticians and practitioners have benefited from the large body of research proposed and implemented since the pioneering works of the 1960s. CALCO aims to bring together researchers and practitioners with interests in both foundational and applicative uses of algebra and coalgebra in computer science, traditional as well as emerging ones. CALCO is a high-level, bi-annual conference formed by joining the forces and reputations of CMCS (the International Workshop on Coalgebraic Methods in Computer Science) and WADT (the Workshop on Algebraic Development Techniques). Explaining a known idea in a new way may make as strong a contribution as inventing a new idea. We encourage the submission of pearls: elegant essays that illustrate an idea in a beautiful or didactically clever way, perhaps by developing an application. Pearls are typically short and concise and so should not be longer than regular papers in the format specified by LIPIcs. Authors who feel they need a bit more space should consult the PC co-chairs. The accepted papers will be included in the final proceedings of the conference. ### Early ideas abstracts Submissions should not exceed 2 pages in the format specified by LIPIcs. The volume of selected abstracts will be made available on arXiv and on the CALCO pages. Dear Ronnie, I am one of many who will always remember your mathematics, your kindness, and your friendship, and who will greatly miss you. Among other things, you created a new mathematics between category theory and topology, with groupoids and higher groupoids playing a special role in it, which is certainly appreciated but not yet fully understood… I remember, you have kindly sent me one of your Bangor preprints, after which I called you (which was the first telephone call abroad in my life) and we agreed to meet on a Topology Conference in Baku in 1987, and that you will visit Tbilisi after that. Your visit has opened many good doors… I remember Category Theory Conference in Bangor in 1989, whose Proceedings were published in 1991 as three issues of Volume 32 of “Cahiers” together with the Proceedings of its ‘second part’ in Cambridge. In the introduction of that volume, you wrote: “The pair of meetings had a high international participation, notable for the presence of nine colleagues from Tbilisi, two from Moscow and five from Eastern Europe…”. My paper submitted there was called “What is a double central extension? – The question was given by Ronnie Brown”, which you suggested to rename as “What is a double central extension? (the question was asked by Ronald Brown)”, which I did. I remember all your kind invitations to Bangor, and I am very glad we published four joint papers, in JPAA in 1997 and 1999, in APCS in 2004, and, together with George Peschke, in TAC in 2021. I am very glad Maria Manuel Clementino, Marino Gran, Timothy Porter and I edited a special volume of JHRS dedicated to you for your 80th birthday. And let me add here, I am sure you are very proud of you son Marcus, who took such an admirable care of you in your last years in this world.
