British Logic Colloquium Birmingham, September 12-14, 2002. http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/~blc02 This meeting is the annual meeting of the British Logic Colloquium which is a national body comprising of logicians working within mathematics, computing science, philosophy and linguistics. The programme of the meeting will include invited lectures and sessions of short contributed talks. As usual, the Colloquium will include talks on mathematical and philosophical logic as well as on logic in Computer Science and on applications of logic. As well as the invited lectures in these areas we invite contributed talks in the above areas. Submissions for contributed talks should be sent electronically or by ordinary mail if this is not possible (see below) by 15th August. Programme time for contributed talks is limited and postgraduate students will be given priority if there is insufficient time to hear everyone. The programme details have yet to be finalized, but it is hoped that this will be in two sessions: a short session on the Friday for experts and non-experts alike, and a longer session of the Saturday with more details for experts. Special Excursion The BLC meeting in 2002 will feature a special excursion during the afternoon of the 13th of September to Bletchley Park. Members of the BLC will hardly need reminding that Bletchley Park was where Alan Turing spent much of his time during the second world war decrypting intercepted messages. Dear all, In the category CGTop of compactly generated Hausdorff topological spaces, the product provides a symmetric closed monoidal structure. Question: Is there another symmetric closed monoidal structure on CGTop ? Thanks in advance. pg. Power, A.J. and Robinson, E.P. Premonoidal categories and notions of computation (ftp://ftp.dcs.qmw.ac.uk/pub/lfp/edmundr/premoncat.ps.gz) in section 2 asserts that there is excatly one symmetric monoidal closed structure on Cat besides the cartesian one. Does anyone know [the location of] a proof? ---Jason

Hello, Here is the situation : C and D are two categories enriched over the category of Hausdorff compactly generated topological spaces. So for any object X,Y, C(X,Y) and D(X,Y) are topological spaces and everything is continuous. As usual, the seminar welcomes talks using or addressing category theory or logic, either explicitly or implicitly, in the study of any aspect of mathematics, computer science or science in general. Braunschweig is located about 60 km East of Hannover and can easily be reached by car or train. The closest airport is in Hannover. Since Expo 2000, there is a fast train connection from that airport to the Hannover main train station. Trains to Braunschweig leave at least once every hour and take about 40 minutes or less. A vague question on weak n-categories

Dear Categorists, A vague kind of question on higher-dimensional analogues of weak categories: basically I was wondering what the current state of play was regarding interchange laws up to isomorphism? Slightly more precisely, given an algebraic description of a natural family of isomorphisms that seem to express 'interchange up to isomorphism' or higher-dimensional analogues of this, what kind of properties should they be expected to have? Obviously, I'm not looking for exact coherence conditions, but I was more wondering whether there is a 'killer application' that rules in or out various possibilities. CATEGORY THEORY AND COMPUTER SCIENCE (CTCS'02) AUGUST 15-17, 2002 GRADUATE STUDENT PRECONFERENCE AUGUST 12-14, 2002 University of Ottawa Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Final Call for Participation & Schedule CTCS'02 is the 9th Conference on Category Theory and Computer Science. The purpose of the conference series is the advancement of the foundations of computing using the tools of category theory. The emphasis is upon applications of category theory, but it is recognized that the area is highly interdisciplinary. Typical topics of interest include, but are not limited to, category-theoretic aspects of the following: coalgebras and computing concurrent and distributed systems constructive mathematics declarative programming and term rewriting domain theory and topology foundations of computer security linear logic modal and temporal logics models of computation program logics, data refinement, and specification programming language semantics type theory Previous meetings have been held in Guildford (Surrey), Edinburgh (twice), Manchester, Paris, Amsterdam, Cambridge, and S. Margherita Ligure (Genova). This is the first time CTCS will be held in North America. The proceedings of the conference will be published as a special issue of ENTCS (Electronic Notes in Theoretical Computer Science). Paper copies of the proceedings will be available to participants at the conference.
