Partial functor

Hi, A partial functor from C to D is given by a subcategory S of C and a functor from S to D. What is the appropriate notion of natural transformation between partial functors that would allow to turn small categories, partial functors and those "natural transformations" into a bicategory? 5-YEAR RESEARCH POSITIONS The Centre for Mathematics of the University of Coimbra (CMUC) invites applications for five 5-year research positions in all areas of Mathematics. Applicants should have a PhD in Mathematics and at least three years of post-doctoral experience, with an international-level publication record and demonstrated ability to perform independent research. Preference will be given to candidates working in one of the areas in which the members of CMUC are currently active. A very good command of English is required. The appointments will be made for three years, renewable for two more. Successful applicants are expected to develop research within the areas of interest of CMUC. They should also contribute to graduate studies, supervising students from the Department of Mathematics. The basic salary is equivalent to the index 195 of the Portuguese research career (in the order of 42 500 euros a year), in accordance with the Ciência 2008 guidelines http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/contratacaodoutorados/edital2008 Benefits include private health insurance and social security. Lambekfest 2013 (temporary webpage)

As announced a short while ago, there will be a one-day celebration of Jim Lambek's 90th year at the CRM in Montreal, on Saturday, 21 September, 2013. There have been some minor delays at the CRM in getting a meeting website up (vacation times, etc), so as an interim measure, we have created the following page http://www.math.mcgill.ca/rags/seminar/Lambekfest2012/Lambekfest2012.html to give interested folks whatever information we have, esp about location, hotels, etc. The link above will point to the official CRM page, once that is ready for publication. CALL FOR PAPERS: Formal Methods 2014 (FM 2014) 19th International Symposium on Formal Methods Singapore, May 14-16, 2014 http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/~pat/FM2014/ FM 2014 is the nineteenth in a series of symposia organized by Formal Methods Europe, an independent association whose aim is to stimulate the use of, and research on, formal methods for software development. The symposia have been notably successful in bringing together innovators and practitioners in precise mathematical methods for software and systems development, industrial users, as well as researchers. Submissions are welcomed in the form of original papers on research and industrial experience, proposals for workshops and tutorials, entries for the exhibition of software tools and projects, and reports on ongoing doctoral work. SCOPE AND TOPICS It will have the goal of highlighting the development and application of formal methods in connection with a variety of disciplines such as medicine, biology, human cognitive modeling, human automation interactions and aeronautics, among others. FM 2014 particularly welcomes papers on techniques, tools and experiences in interdisciplinary frameworks, as well as on experience with practical applications of formal methods in industrial and research settings, experimental validation of tools and methods as well as construction and evolution of formal methods tools. The broad topics of interest for FM 2014 include but are not limited to: Interdisciplinary formal methods: techniques, tools and experiences demonstrating formal methods in interdisciplinary frameworks. Formal methods in practice: industrial applications of formal methods, experience with introducing formal methods in industry, tool usage reports, experiments with challenge problems. Authors are encouraged to explain how the use of formal methods has overcome problems, lead to improvements in design or provided new insights. Tools for formal methods: advances in automated verification and model-checking, integration of tools, environments for formal methods, experimental validation of tools. Authors are encouraged to demonstrate empirically that the new tool or environment advances the state of the art. Role of formal methods in software and systems engineering: development processes with formal methods, usage guidelines for formal methods, method integration. Authors are encouraged to demonstrate that process innovations lead to qualitative or quantitative improvements. Theoretical foundations: all aspects of theory related to specification, verification, refinement, and static and dynamic analysis. Authors are encouraged to explain how their results contribute to the solution of practical problems. PAPER SUBMISSION Papers will be evaluated by at least three members of the Program Committee. They should be in Springer LNCS format and describe, in English, original work that has not been published or submitted elsewhere. Workshop on Quantum Mathematics and Computation, Oxford, October 1-4 2013

Dear all, We invite you to attend the inaugural research workshop of the Centre for Quantum Mathematics and Computation at the University of Oxford, on October 1-4, 2013. The workshop will have plenary talks by Steve Awodey, John Baez, Alexander Beilinson, Lucien Hardy, Martin Hyland, Dana Scott, Vladimir Voevodsky, and Anton Zeilinger, along with contributed talks and a problem session. The workshop is one of four Clay Research Workshops occurring in Oxford that week (including one on Number Theory and Physics, and one on Computational Intractability) along with the Clay Research Conference and the conference celebrating the opening of the new Oxford Mathematics building. Daniel M. Kan, 1927-2013

>>From Clark Barwick, forwarded -------------------------------- Dear colleagues and friends, On Sunday, 4 August, 2013, Daniel M. Kan died peacefully at his home in Newton, MA, surrounded by his family. It was his 86th birthday. There was a small burial service Monday afternoon. Dan received his Ph.D in 1955, and after short-term positions at Columbia, Princeton, and Hebrew University, he joined the Department of Mathematics at MIT in 1959, where he remained until his retirement in 1993. Dan continued to do mathematics until the last week of his life. In his long career, Dan published more than 70 papers with 15 coauthors. His lifelong mathematical pursuit was abstract homotopy theory, and many of his ideas were so natural and flexible that they quickly became incorporated into the very fabric of algebraic topology. He supervised 15 Ph.D students (all of them at MIT), and he influenced many more through his unique seminar in algebraic topology, which today is known as the Kan Seminar.
