An additional Housing Announcement in regard to CT2016 Due to the fact that we are holding the AARMS Summer School at Dalhousie before CT2016, we have access to a limited number of dorm rooms at a lower price than what is advertized on the website: only $20 per night. This rooms are in separate renovated houses and will only be shared with CT-participants. However, I only have about 6-10 of these, and I need to make the commitment to book these tomorrow. So if you are interested in getting one of those, please contact me right away, and I will accommodate the first takers until the house is full. PhD Scholarship: Logic for Multiscale Network Modelling

Deadline for applications: 17th June 2016 Overall up to six PhD Scholarships will be awarded for projects from the list of topics at http://engineering.leeds.ac.uk/research-opportunity/201323/research-degrees /614/funded-studentships-in-the-school-of-computing- The Logic for Multiscale Network Modelling project would be supervised by Dr John Stell (j.g.stell(a)leeds.ac.uk) Computing with data in the form of networks is important for many purposes. Examples include: social networks modelling relationships between people; road networks for navigation; biological networks describing processes of interaction; networks of connections between concepts in ontologies for knowledge representation in artificial intelligence. In these and other areas networks are needed at multiple scales. Multiscale networks can arise from the need to model different processes at different levels of detail as well as from the need to 'zoom out' from large volumes of data to visualise overall patterns. This PhD project will develop mathematical foundations for modelling multiscale networks to provide logical tools for reasoning about knowledge at diverse scales. The project builds on recent research which has resulted in a novel modal logic based on relations between graphs and, more generally, hypergraphs. These relations model similarities between elements (links and nodes) of a network. When moving to a less detailed level different but similar elements can collapse to a single element. Work in the PhD will include establishing algebraic properties of these relations, applying them in logics for reasoning about levels of detail, and evaluating the resulting techniques with respect to network data. Dear category-theorists, Many of you will be aware that over the years I have kept a record of all talks given at meetings of the Peripatetic Seminar on Sheaves and Logic. I promised to make this publicly available on the occasion of the hundredth meeting; and it has now been uploaded to the website, at https://www.dpmms.cam.ac.uk/~jg352/PSSL100/pssl100.html Information on each talk is given in the form Date; start time; speaker; current affiliation; title. For reasons of space, when I started keeping the list (typed out in hard copy in those days!) I omitted finishing times (so you have to work out for yourself where the coffee-breaks came) and co-authors of joint work. By the time I went over to using TeX it was too late to reconstruct this information for the earlier meetings, so I continued to omit it. Dear colleagues, We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on an EPSRC-funded project "Recursion, Guarded Recursion and Computational Effects". http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/N023757/1 We shall be investigating fine-grained typed calculi and operational, denotational and categorical semantics for languages that combine either guarded or general recursion and type recursion with a range of computational effects. This will build on existing work such as call-by-push-value and Nakano's guarded recursion calculus. The successful candidate will have a PhD in programming language semantics or a related discipline, and an ability to conduct collaborative mathematical research. Knowledge of operational and denotational semantics, category theory, type theory and related subjects are all desirable. You will work with me (principal investigator) and Neelakantan Krishnaswami (co-investigator) as part of the Theoretical Computer Science group at the University of Birmingham. Hi, the following result appears to be folklore: Given a locally small category C, the full subcategory of [C^op,Set] on small presheaves (i.e. those presheaves that are colimits of a small diagram of representables) is a free cocomplete locally small category on C. I've seen and heard this result in many places, and know how to prove it, but is there a proof written out in the literature? And where did the statement first appear?
