TAC special issue for Marta Bunge: deadline extension

Dear colleagues, Given the very sad news of last week, it seems to us sensible to extend the deadline for the submission of papers to the TAC special volume dedicated to the work of Marta Bunge. As a friend noted, several people (himself included), who would like to contribute, felt that the deadline was too close, they were too busy with the new academic year post-pandemic. A new firm deadline of 31st March might make sure that everyone who wants to honor Marta has a chance. As mentioned before, no one knew Marta would become ill when we started this project: we meant it purely from the perspective of celebrating her work. But now everyone feels an extra poignancy, a need to say thank you for all she has done. It would be good to honor that need too. Perhaps we can collect some personal histories. For example, Micah McCurdy on Twitter wrote: "I hardly knew her at all but one time when I was very young at the Carvoeiro CT there was another young attendee who had some sort of panic attack and she was immensely kind to him, missed a talk to calm him down. The purpose of this double-blind process is to help PC members and external reviewers come to an initial judgment about the paper without bias, and not to make it impossible for them to discover who the authors are if they were to try. Nothing should be done in the name of anonymity that weakens the submission or makes the job of reviewing the paper more difficult. In particular, important references should not be omitted or anonymized. In addition, authors should feel free to disseminate their ideas or draft versions of their paper as they normally would. For example, authors may post drafts of their papers on the web, submit them to arXiv, and give talks on their research ideas. 4) The submissions are done via Easychair to the appropriate track of the conference (see topics below). The use of pdflatex and the LIPIcs style are mandatory: papers that deviate significantly from the required format risk rejection without consideration of merit. 5) During the rebuttal phase, authors will have from March 22-25 to view and respond to initial reviews. Further instructions will be sent to authors of submitted papers before that time. 6) At least one author of each accepted paper is required to register for the conference, and all talks are in-person. Dear Silvia, dear Eric, I have affectionate, vivid memories of your mother, from many conferences, her sabbatical and her visits in Genoa, with your father for long periods and sometimes with you. We had long discussions, about mathematics, politics and everything. We miss them, more than I am able to say. Marta had familial links with this town, as you certainly know but perhaps most of our colleagues ignore. Many years ago, she asked me to find here documents of her grand father (or grand-grand, I do not remember), through which she could obtain the Italian citizenship. Dear Family, Dear Friends, We are very sad to share the news that our beloved mother Marta Bunge passed away peacefully early this morning at her home in Brooklyn, NY. With us at her side, she was surrounded not only with the love of our family, but also with attentive hospice care in her apartment. We were lucky to spend much time with her since she moved to New York from Montreal almost one year ago. Despite sadness that her last chapter was so brief, we are grateful that she was close to us, especially when she became ill. In losing her, we lose a wonderful, smart and elegant mother, a wise grandmother, a pioneering mathematician, and above all a dear friend. We know that many of you will feel the same, and we are very sorry to have to share this news. We have fulfilled her wishes, which include that there be no memorial or ceremony. We hope we can stay in contact with you. We apologize that we are not able to email you individually, but we wanted you all to know as soon as possible. Previous SYCO events have been held in Birmingham, Strathclyde, Oxford, Chapman, Leicester, Tallinn, and Como. While no list of topics could be exhaustive, SYCO welcomes submissions with a compositional focus related to any of the following areas, in particular from the perspective of category theory: - logical methods in computer science, including classical and quantum programming, type theory, concurrency, natural language processing and machine learning; - graphical calculi, including string diagrams, Petri nets and reaction networks; - languages and frameworks, including process algebras, proof nets, type theory and game semantics; - abstract algebra and pure category theory, including monoidal category theory, higher category theory, operads, polygraphs, and relationships to homotopy theory; - quantum algebra, including quantum computation and representation theory; - tools and techniques, including rewriting, formal proofs and proof assistants, and game theory; - industrial applications, including case studies and real-world problem descriptions. ** IMPORTANT DATES ** All deadlines are 23:59 Anywhere on Earth. Submission deadline: Monday 7 November, 2022 Author notification: Sunday 20 November, 2022 Symposium dates: Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 December 2022 ** SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS ** Submissions are by OpenReview, via the SYCO 10 submission page: https://openreview.net/group?id=cl.cam.ac.uk/SYCO/2022/Symposium Submission is easy, with no format requirements or page restrictions. The meeting does not have proceedings, so work can be submitted even if it has been submitted or published elsewhere. Think creatively: you could submit a recent paper, or notes on work in progress, or even a recent Masters or PhD thesis. In the event that more good-quality submissions are received than can be accommodated in the timetable, the programme committee may choose to *defer* some submissions to a future meeting, rather than reject them. Deferred submissions can be re-submitted to any future SYCO meeting, where they will not need peer review, and where they will be prioritised for inclusion in the programme. Meetings will be held sufficiently frequently to avoid a backlog of deferred papers. If you have a submission which was deferred from a previous SYCO meeting, it will not automatically be considered for SYCO 10; you still need to submit it again through OpenReview. When submitting, append the words "DEFERRED FROM SYCO X" to the title of your paper, replacing "X" with the appropriate meeting number. out of the blue?

End of August Marta and I exchanged some mails. As usual mathematical and other things mixed. She was mentioning hospices in a subordinate clause but not at all that it was an acute problem for her. Had no idea she as ill! So this was a very bad surprise this morning when reading the mail telling that she just had died. Although we hardly ever met personally we exchanged tons of of mails. It started when we, i.e. she, Mamuka J., Jonathon F. and I worked together on aspects of distribution algebras. My role was a minor one namely to help with some knowledge about fibered aspects. She liked these things and had none of the common prejudices. Remember that we exchanged some mails when Jean B. died earlier this year. (I am still grateful to her for providing me with his famous Montreal lecture notes!) Haven't had the faintest idea she would follow so quickly... I was deeply impressed by her work on measures on toposes (with J. Funk). Have learnt a lot from her in our period of collaboration.
