I'd just like to put in a plug for the philosophy behind John Reynolds's package. It doesn't attempt to perform miracles (such as global layout), but does look after messy low-level details such as shading of arrows by vertex labels. Furthermore, it has a two-level structure which allows an expert to do non-standard things without complicating life for the beginner.
