In response to Paul Taylor's letter expressing a certain amount of annoyance, it is clearly time for a (perhaps also annoying?) parable told me by a philosophical hero of mine, Steve Schanuel. It is well known that John Isbell has an incredible ability to create counterexamples when they exist. A great load was lifted from his mind when he realized one day that he was not obliged to provide a counterexample for everyone in category theory who could not prove their conjecture! -------- But, Paul, I WILL buy a beer (maybe even a bottle of good Australian red) for anyone who does design string-drawing software I can use. In the meantime, don't worry. I'm happy with MacDraw.
