Re: [cat.fr] Andrée Ehresmann (1935-2026)
Thank you Camell. Thank you for the message Isar, Marino and René. Condolences to you all and to the category community. A solid pillar of category theory has moved on. It is hard to remember when I first became aware of Andrée, possibly from her joint publications such as [Bastiani, Andrée; Ehresmann, Charles Catégories de foncteurs structurés. Cahiers Topologie Géom. Différentielle 11 (1969), 329–384] with Charles. As mentioned in the message, Andrée did the total editing of the Cahiers for quite awhile. However, it was much more than normal editing. She rewrote all the papers herself (as I understood it) in the Cahiers style! She also acted as a referee and mentor providing corrections and suggestions. This applied to my two early papers "Two constructions on lax functors" and "Fibrations in bicategories". The first version of the latter did not detail the cofibrations for enriched categories at all. I am so glad Andrée pushed me into attending to that. I was honoured when she asked me to join the editorial board. Andrée's notes on Charles' complete works are invaluable. As many will know, Australia has a special connection with Amien. Imogen and Max Kelly came back from their visit glowing about what wonderful hosts the Ehresmanns were. I was fortunate enough to experience that and confirm it with two visits while Charles was still with us, one visit with family and one alone. Mme Ehresmann will be remembered as a pioneer of category theory, its communication, and its application. Dear Categorists, One cannot stress enough Mme Ehresmann’s invaluable contributions to the development and promotion of category theory. Echoing Ross’ vivid reminiscences, in addition to her own impressive scientific record and her immense work in editing, running and actually producing the Cahiers, I would point also to her passionate contribution in promoting and preserving Charles Ehresmann’s work. Andrée gave an emotional talk just one month after Charles’ death, at a special weekend meeting of the regional Nordwestdeutsches Kategorienseminar, held October 26-28, 1979, in Arnsberg (a town east of Dortmund and Hagen, Germany), with several people from abroad (including Jiri Adamek, Anders Kock, Chris Mulvey, Peter Johnstone and René Guitart) in attendance. The proceedings of that meeting, including Andrée’s memorable and personal talk, are available at https://ub-deposit.fernuni-hagen.de/receive/mir_mods_00001346 The following summer, in July 1980, she organized in Charles’ memory, the wide-open category theory meeting in Amiens, a true forerunner of the CT summer series as we know it today---after slots for general category meetings at Oberwolfach or the Isle of Thorns had become harder to secure. The experience of the earlier Arnsberg meeting gave Nico Pumpluen, Klaus-Heiner Kamps and me the courage to announce the next big CT meeting, held in the summer of 1981 in Gummersbach. Sincere thanks and best wishes to Isar, Marino and René for preserving Mme Ehresmann’s legacy through their work for the Cahiers.
