Looking for volunteers to help with typesetting Bird's 1984 thesis
Dear all, I am looking for volunteers to help with the task of re-typesetting Greg Bird's 1984 thesis "Limits in 2-Categories of Locally-Presentable Categories" for publication (a scanned copy may be found here<http://science.mq.edu.au/~street/BirdPhD.pdf>). Bird's thesis is an influential work in two-dimensional category theory that remains one of the best references for a number of constructions in 2-category theory and the theory of locally presentable categories, but has unfortunately enjoyed limited distribution. It is thus fitting that it should be reprinted and thereby made more widely accessible. Each volunteer will be allocated approximately 10 pages to typeset. In my experience, it takes about an hour to typeset 10 pages (and should certainly not take longer than a few hours). There are a little over 100 pages, so I am hoping for around 10 volunteers. (I will handle the typesetting of the diagrams myself.) Please let me know by replying (privately) to this email if you would be willing to assist with the typesetting process. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Nathanael You're receiving this message because you're a member of the Categories mailing list group from Macquarie University. Dear Nathanael, I studied parts of Bird's thesis while writing the paper "Advances in Mathematics Volume 333, 31 July 2018, Pages 266-313", and found it a remarkable work, I hope your re-typesetting is successful, so that Bird's thesis can be widely distributed and available as, for ample, in ArXiv, and may be TAC would be interested. Any researcher in two-dimensional category theory should be aware of Bird's thesis. e.d. On 06/07/2025 08:28, Nathanael Arkor wrote:

Why not let your favorite AI agent take a stab at this first? I've used them for similar jobs in the past, and with the right prompting, they can usually complete the job with very high accuracy, with only a little cleanup required at the end. Dear all, Many thanks to everyone who responded! I have received many offers to help with the typesetting, and no longer need any further volunteers. I will be in contact with those who reached out to me soon to explain the re-typesetting process. Thank you again for all the enthusiasm and encouragement.
