MFPS 18 + Clifford Lectures
Dear Colleagues, Below is the first announcement of this year's MFPS meeting, which is being coordinated with the 2002 Clifford Lectures. The Clifford Lectures will take place on the campus of Tulane University, New Orleans, LA USA from midday, March 20 through midday, March 23, 2002. The Eighteenth Workshop on the Mathematical Foundations of Programming Semantics will then follow, taking place on the Tulane campus from midday, March 23 through March 26, 2002. This year's MFPS will be held in conjunction with the Tulane Mathematics Department's 2002 Clifford Lectures. This annual series of lectures is named in honor of A. H. Clifford, noted algebraist and longtime member of the Tulane Mathematics Department. The 2002 Clifford Lecturer is Sergei N. Artemov, Gaduate Center, CUNY. Professor Artemov will deliver three lectues, and the remainder of the Clifford Lectures program will be comprised of lectures by other invited speakers. All MFPS participants are invited to attend the Clifford Lectures. Since this is a workshop year for MFPS, contributions by participants of talks are welcome on a first come, first serve basis. Detailed information about both the Clifford Lectures and about MFPS 18, as well as updates about the meetings, can be found at the web page http://www.math.tulane.edu/~mfps/mfps18.html An announcement providing registration details and more information about the program will be forthcoming. If you have any questions about MFPS, you can send email to mfps@math.tulane.edu. Please pass this announcement on to those who you think would have an interest in participating. The invited speakers for MFPS 18 are Rajeev Alur (Penn) John Mitchell (Stanford) Patrick Cousot (ENS, Paris) John Reynolds (CMU) John Hatcliff (Kansas State) Doug Smith (Kestrel) In addition to the invited talks, there will be three special sessions at the meeting. The first will be devoted to abstract interpretation, and is being organized by Radhia Cousot (Ecole Polytechnique) and David Schmidt (Kansas State). The second is on spatial logics, and is being organized by Philippa Gardner (Imperial) and Peter O'Hearn (QMW). The third is on security, and it is being organized by Catherine Meadows (NRL). The remainder of the MFPS program will consist of talks contributed by the participants at the meeting. Those interested in contributing a talk at the meeting should send a title and short abstract to mfps@math.tulane.edu. The available slots will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. The MFPS conferences are devoted to those areas of mathematics, logic and computer science which are related to the semantics of programming languages. The series particularly has stressed providing a forum where both mathematicians and computer scientists can meet and exchange ideas about problems of common interest. We also encourage participation by researchers in neighboring areas, since we strive to maintain breadth in the scope of the series. The Organizing Committee for MFPS consists of Stephen Brookes (CMU), Michael Main (Colorado), Austin Melton (Kent State University), Michael Mislove (Tulane) and David Schmidt (Kansas State). The Co-chairs for MFPS XVIII are Michael Mislove and Stephen Brookes. The Local Arrangements Chairman is Michael Mislove (Tulane). Additional information about the meeting will be posted at the MFPS 18 home page http://www.math.tulane.edu/~mfps/mfps18.html as it bcomes available. This information also will be sent via email to those who request it. To put your name on the MFPS mailing list, send email to mfps@math.tulane.edu. General inquiries about MFPS XVIII can be addressed to mfps@math.tulane.edu. Registration Information Detailed information about registration and accommodations will available shortly. Please check the MFPS XVIII home page http://www.math.tulane.edu/~mfps/mfps18.html for updates. Support We expect to receive support from the US Office of Naval Research. Because of this, we are able to provide limited support for participants. We will focus the available funds on supporting participation by graduate students, and on helping support attendance by members of minorities and women who are contributing a talk at the meeting. If you are a member of one of these groups and are interested in obtaining suppport to attend the meeting, send email to mfps@math.tulane.edu.
