I am very sad to report that Murray Adelman died on Monday 15 April 2002 as the result of a heart attack. Murray joined the Macquarie University Mathematics Department in 1975. He took early retirement in 1998 and moved to Blackheath, in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, with his wife Mary Knowler who died on 26 June 2000. As a PhD student of Peter Freyd, Murray found an elegant construction of the free abelian category. He continued research in category theory and was a stimulating colleague. His recent work with John Corbett on applying topos theory to quantum mechanics is receiving a great deal of attention. Below is an extract from a message John sent to the Department. Ross -------------------------- Following [Murray's] wishes, his body was cremated at the Northern Suburbs crematorium this morning, 24 April, in a private ceremony. His friends hope to scatter his ashes near Govett's Leap and will inform us when this will occur so that anyone who wishes can attend. I saw Murray only a couple of days before his death. We went from his house to the Gardener's Inn in Blackheath where we had a beer and lunch then drove to Anvil Rock. Murray was not strong enough to walk up steep slopes but he was OK on the level ground. He was very positive about his health at the time and we talked a little about our joint mathematical work and he suggested that he would come to Sydney sometime to visit the Maths Dept and have a Japanese meal at a restaurant that he liked. He was as sharp and funny as ever. Murray was a friend who will be missed by all his friends and a mathematician who will be remembered with pleasure and gratitude by his students and colleagues. The Mathematics Department is seeking to find an appropriate way to commemorate him. John Corbett Associate Professor Mathematics Department.
