Dear Colleagues, The Editors of Theory and Applications of Categories are now launching a new publication series, `Reprints in Theory and Applications of Categories' (TAC Reprints). As many of you are aware, there is a body of important literature in Category Theory and closely related subjects which has never been published in journal form, or which has been published in journals whose narrow circulation makes access very difficult. In spite of this, some of these articles have become `classics' providing a uniquely clear introduction to subject areas written by the originators. They circulate within the community, sometimes in prepublication form and often after many generations of xero-copying, but are simply unavailable to many interested readers. Publication in `Reprints in Theory and Applications of Categories' will permit free and full dissemination of such documents over the Internet. As the procedures below imply, only articles which are of acknowledged importance will be candidates for publication in TAC Reprints and then only if they cannot be obtained easily from the better libraries. Articles published in, for example, Springer Lecture Notes or any of the journals specializing in Category Theory are not suitable for TAC Reprints. Since the number of candidate articles for TAC Reprints is not increasing, the number of articles published is not expected to be large and TAC Reprints will not necessarily carry on publishing into the indefinite future. The following is the procedure for dealing with articles proposed for TAC Reprints: 1. After obtaining written permission from any copyright holder, an author, or other member of the community, may propose an article to a TAC Editor for TAC Reprints (provided that they agree to 3. below). 2. If the article has already undergone a normal refereeing process, for example by a journal, that will not be repeated. An article not published in a refereed form must first be refereed. Then, in order to ensure that only articles of lasting significance are published in TAC Reprints, the following procedure will be followed: (i) details of the article (author, title, original publication data) will be circulated to all TAC Editors; (ii) TAC Editors may signify assent or not to republish the article, and it will be accepted for TAC Reprints only if a 2/3 majority of TAC Editors responding within one month assents and there are at least five responses. 3. When an article is accepted, the author, or other proposer, will be required to provide to TAC either a usable TeX source for the article or a PDF document acceptable to the Managing Editor that reproduces a typeset version of the article. Up to five pages of corrections, commentary and forward pointers may be appended by the author. 4. TAC will publish TAC Reprints articles as a separate series. The Editors of TAC now invite submissions for TAC Reprints. Bob Rosebrugh for the Editors of TAC
